What is a log store and why do I need one? A log store is a purpose-built outdoor structure designed to keep firewood dry, ventilated, and properly seasoned until it is ready to burn. In the UK's damp climate, logs left uncovered or stacked directly on the ground absorb moisture quickly, making them difficult to light, inefficient to burn, and prone to rot. A well-designed log store lifts the wood off the ground, shelters it from rain overhead, and allows airflow through the sides to draw out moisture gradually which is what seasoning actually is. What is the difference between seasoned and kiln-dried logs Seasoned logs are cut and then left to dry naturally over time typically 12 to 24 months for hardwoods such as oak, ash, and beech, or 6 to 12 months for softwoods like pine and spruce. Kiln dried logs are dried in a controlled heated environment, which reduces their moisture content to under 20% in a matter of days. Both are suitable for burning in wood burners, fire pits, and chimeneas, but kiln-dried logs are ready to use immediately and offer more consistent performance. Why does moisture content matter and how do I check it? Wood with a moisture content above 20% burns poorly. It produces excessive smoke, delivers less heat per log, and deposits creosote in your flue a combustible residue that builds up over time and is both a fire hazard and costly to remove. The simplest way to check your logs is with a firewood moisture meter, which is a small, inexpensive tool that gives an instant reading.
