What is a back to wall bath? A back to wall bath sometimes called a BTW bath is a freestanding-style bath designed with one straight, flat edge so it sits flush against a wall. From the front it has the sculptural, luxury look of a freestanding bath, but it takes up far less floor space and eliminates the awkward gaps that make a fully freestanding bath harder to clean around. It is one of the most practical choices for anyone who wants a statement bath without placing it in the centre of the room.

What size back to wall bath do I need? The right size depends on your bathroom layout and how much space you have available. Most back to wall baths come in a range of standard lengths, with a medium-length bath being the most popular choice for UK bathrooms. Width options are similarly varied, so there is generally something to suit most spaces. Before buying, measure the wall where the bath will sit and make sure there is enough open space in front of it for comfortable, practical access both for everyday use and to meet standard building guidelines. Where should the taps go on a back to wall bath? On a double-ended back to wall bath, taps should ideally be positioned in the middle of the bath, either deck-mounted through tap holes in the rim or wall-mounted above the bath. We strongly recommend that a qualified plumber carries out the full installation to ensure the bath is correctly levelled, fixed, plumbed, and sealed particularly the silicone seal at the wall joint, which is critical for preventing water ingress behind the bath.

Can a back to wall bath work in a smaller bathroom? Yes. Back to wall baths are often the best solution for smaller bathrooms precisely because they sit against the wall and free up more usable floor space than a fully freestanding design. A 1500mm or 1600mm back to wall bath can make a genuinely luxurious addition to an en-suite or a family bathroom that is not large enough to accommodate a centrepiece freestanding tub.
