02. WHAT MAKES A GROUND SOURCE HEAT PUMP ECO-FRIENDLY?

Ground Source Heat Pumps extract renewable heat stored naturally in the ground, providing low-carbon heating and hot water. They use electricity efficiently to move heat rather than generate it, producing significantly lower CO₂ emissions compared to fossil fuel boilers.

03. IS THIS GROUND SOURCE HEAT PUMP SUITABLE FOR MY PROPERTY?

Ground Source Heat Pumps are suitable for a wide range of properties, particularly homes with sufficient outdoor space for ground loops or boreholes. They perform best in well-insulated properties and are ideal for new builds or larger renovation projects.

04. CAN A GROUND SOURCE HEAT PUMP REPLACE MY EXISTING GAS OR OIL BOILER?

Yes. A Ground Source Heat Pump can fully replace an existing gas, oil, or LPG boiler. In some cases, upgrades to radiators, underfloor heating, or hot water storage may be required to ensure optimal performance.

05. HOW EFFICIENT IS A GROUND SOURCE HEAT PUMP?

Ground Source Heat Pumps are among the most efficient heating systems available. Typical systems achieve a Coefficient of Performance (COP) of 3.5–5.0, meaning for every 1kWh of electricity used, up to 5kWh of heat can be delivered.

06. HOW MUCH WILL IT COST TO RUN COMPARED TO A GAS BOILER?

Although installation costs are higher, running costs are often lower than gas or oil boilers—especially when paired with underfloor heating or low-temperature radiators. Savings are maximised in well-insulated homes and where electricity tariffs or solar PV are used.

07. CAN THIS HEAT PUMP WORK WITH MY EXISTING HOT WATER CYLINDER?

Most Ground Source Heat Pumps require a heat pump–compatible hot water cylinder with a larger coil. Your installer can advise whether your existing cylinder is suitable or if a replacement is recommended.

08. HOW NOISY IS A GROUND SOURCE HEAT PUMP SYSTEM?

Ground Source Heat Pumps are extremely quiet. The main components are installed indoors, and there is no external fan unit. Noise levels are typically comparable to a modern refrigerator, making them ideal for noise-sensitive locations.

09. HOW MUCH SPACE DOES A GROUND SOURCE SYSTEM NEED?

Space requirements depend on the ground collector type:

 

Horizontal ground loops require a larger garden area

Vertical boreholes need minimal surface space but require drilling

 

Your installer will assess the best option based on land size and ground conditions.

10. ARE GROUND SOURCE HEAT PUMPS ELIGIBLE FOR GOVERNMENT GRANTS?
