02. WHAT IS A HEAT PUMP HOT WATER CYLINDER?

A heat pump hot water cylinder is a specially designed hot water storage tank that works efficiently with low-temperature heat sources such as air source heat pumps. It stores hot water for taps, showers, and baths while maximising system efficiency.

03. IS THIS CYLINDER SUITABLE FOR USE WITH AN AIR SOURCE HEAT PUMP?

Yes. This cylinder is specifically designed for use with air source heat pumps and features a high-surface-area coil that allows efficient heat transfer at lower flow temperatures compared to standard cylinders.

04. WHAT SIZE HEAT PUMP CYLINDER DO I NEED FOR MY PROPERTY?

The correct size depends on the number of occupants, bathrooms, and your hot water usage. As a general guide: 

 

1–2 people: 150–180 litres 

3–4 people: 200–250 litres

5+ people or multiple bathrooms: 300 litres+ 

 

Your installer can confirm the ideal size during system design.

05. HOW IS A HEAT PUMP CYLINDER DIFFERENT FROM A STANDARD HOT WATER CYLINDER?

Heat pump cylinders have larger internal coils for low-temperature heating, improved insulation to reduce heat loss, and faster recovery when paired with heat pumps. Standard cylinders are typically designed for higher-temperature boiler systems and are less efficient with heat pumps.

06. CAN THIS CYLINDER BE INSTALLED IN AN EXISTING PROPERTY?

Yes. Heat pump cylinders can be installed in both new builds and retrofit projects. Space, pipework, and water pressure will need to be assessed by a qualified installer before installation.

07. DOES THIS CYLINDER PROVIDE MAINS PRESSURE HOT WATER?

Yes. This is an unvented hot water cylinder, meaning it delivers hot water at mains pressure for strong shower performance and fast bath filling, without the need for a cold water storage tank.

08. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO HEAT THE WATER?

Heat-up times vary depending on cylinder size, heat pump output, and incoming water temperature. Typically, full reheat times range from 1.5 to 3 hours, with hot water available continuously throughout the day.

09. HOW MUCH SPACE DOES THE SYSTEM NEED?

Heat pump cylinders are similar in footprint to standard cylinders but are often taller. Adequate clearance is required for installation, servicing, and safety components. Exact dimensions can be found in the product data sheet.

10. ARE COOL ENERGY HEAT PUMP CYLINDERS ELIGIBLE FOR GOVERNMENT GRANT SCHEMES?

Yes. When installed as part of an MCS-certified heat pump system, heat pump cylinders are typically eligible under UK government schemes such as the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS), subject to installer assessment and system compliance.
