The Sauna Was Biohacking Before Biohacking Existed

Sleep trackers, cold plunges, continuous glucose monitors, red light panels — the wellness industry has built a multi-billion-dollar market around optimising the human body.

But one of the most evidence-backed tools in that space predates all of it by centuries, and it doesn't require an app, a subscription, or a wearable. It's a wooden room, some hot stones, and time.

What Counts as a Biohack

Strip away the marketing, and biohacking is simple: it's the deliberate use of an intervention to shift how the body functions, with the goal of a measurable outcome — better sleep, faster recovery, lower disease risk, improved focus. Some interventions are cheap and low-tech (fasting windows, cold showers, sleep hygiene). Others come with a price tag and a dashboard.

Sauna bathing sits in the first category, but it produces effects that rival — and in some studies outlast — many of the more expensive ones.

What Actually Happens in a Sauna

Heat exposure puts real, measurable stress on the cardiovascular system. Heart rate rises, often into the range associated with moderate-intensity exercise. Blood vessels dilate, peripheral blood flow increases, and core temperature climbs. The body responds the way it would to a workout — without the joint load.

This isn't a subjective feeling of relaxation dressed up as physiology. It's a repeatable cardiovascular and thermoregulatory response, which is precisely why it has become a serious object of study rather than just a folk remedy.

The Research Behind the Ritual

The most influential evidence comes from Finland's Kuopio Ischaemic Heart Disease Risk Factor Study, led by Dr. Jari Laukkanen at the University of Eastern Finland. The study followed a population-based sample of 2,315 middle-aged men (ages 42–60) from Eastern Finland, with baseline examinations conducted between 1984 and 1989, and published its landmark findings in JAMA Internal Medicine in 2015.

The results were striking. Men who used a sauna 4–7 times per week had a 63% lower risk of sudden cardiac death and a 50% lower risk of fatal cardiovascular disease compared with those who used a sauna just once a week. Researchers proposed several mechanisms behind the effect, including improved autonomic regulation — reflected in higher vagal tone and lower sympathetic activity — along with favorable changes in inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein.

A related, larger follow-up study extended these findings to women. Drawing on data from 1,688 participants around Kuopio, Finland, with an average age of 63 and a roughly even split between men and women, researchers tracked cardiovascular deaths over a mean follow-up of 15 years. They found that people who used a sauna 4–7 times a week had a cardiovascular death rate of 2.7 events per 1,000 person-years, compared with 10.1 events per 1,000 person-years among those who used a sauna only once a week — roughly a fourfold difference.

The same research group has since published findings linking frequent sauna use to a lower risk of stroke and a reduced incidence of dementia and Alzheimer's disease in Finnish cohorts, and to a lower incidence of hypertension over time. Together, these studies form one of the more consistent bodies of observational evidence behind any single wellness practice.

It's worth being precise about what this evidence shows and doesn't show. These are observational cohort studies, not randomized controlled trials — they establish a strong, dose-dependent association, not proof that sauna bathing alone causes the reduction in risk. People who sauna frequently may differ from infrequent users in other health habits, even after statistical adjustment. Smaller randomized trials on vascular markers exist and are supportive, but the large mortality numbers come from cohort data. That caveat doesn't erase the finding — a fourfold difference in cardiovascular death rate, replicated across multiple endpoints in the same population over 15–20 years, is a serious signal. It just means "correlation with a clear mechanistic story" is the honest description, not "definitively proven."

Why It's Resurfacing Now

Most wellness trends follow a familiar arc: a new device or supplement generates buzz, gets amplified by influencers, and fades once the evidence fails to catch up with the marketing. Sauna bathing is moving in the opposite direction — its popularity is increasing because two decades of longitudinal data are catching up to what Nordic populations have practiced for generations.

The appeal isn't novelty. It's that the outcomes people report — deeper sleep, faster recovery, lower perceived stress — now have a data trail behind them, and the practice costs nothing beyond access to a sauna and the time to use it.

The Real Lesson

The broader biohacking industry often implies that meaningful optimization requires new technology. The sauna research suggests otherwise. Some of the highest-leverage interventions for long-term health — sleep, movement, diet, stress regulation, and heat exposure — are old, unglamorous, and don't generate a product launch.

Sauna bathing has centuries of continuous use, a substantial and growing evidence base, and no dependency on hardware. It doesn't need to be reframed as a biohack to be taken seriously. If anything, the newer biohacks are the ones still trying to catch up to it.
