How Often Should You Use a Sauna?

One of the biggest misconceptions about sauna use is that longer or more frequent sessions automatically produce greater health benefits. In reality, the evidence suggests there is a "sweet spot". The largest long-term studies have consistently found that regular sauna use several times each week delivers the greatest health benefits, while consistency matters far more than marathon sessions.

Here's what the science says about each level of use.

Using a Sauna Once a Week

If you use a sauna once a week, you're already doing more than many people.

A weekly sauna can help reduce stress, promote relaxation, improve sleep and provide temporary muscle recovery after exercise. However, most of the long-term health research uses once-weekly sauna users as the comparison group rather than the optimal group.

Think of once a week as a good starting point rather than the ideal routine.

Good for: Beginners, occasional users and those fitting sauna around a busy schedule.

Using a Sauna Twice a Week

Twice-weekly sauna use is where regular physiological adaptations begin to occur.

Repeated heat exposure encourages your cardiovascular system to become more efficient at regulating blood flow, while giving your body regular opportunities to recover and relax.

Many healthcare professionals consider two sessions per week an achievable long-term routine for most adults.

Good for: General wellbeing, relaxation and building a consistent habit.

Using a Sauna Three Times a Week

Three sessions per week is where the evidence becomes particularly compelling.

The University of Eastern Finland followed more than 2,300 adults for over 20 years and found that people using a sauna 2–3 times each week had a 22% lower risk of sudden cardiac death than those using one sauna session per week. They also experienced lower rates of fatal cardiovascular disease.

For many experts, three sessions each week represents the ideal balance between scientific evidence and practicality.

Good for: Cardiovascular health, recovery and long-term wellness.

Using a Sauna Four Times a Week

Four weekly sessions appear to provide even greater benefits.

In the same Finnish research, people using a sauna 4–7 times per week experienced a 63% lower risk of sudden cardiac death compared with once-weekly users. Researchers also observed lower risks of cardiovascular disease, stroke and all-cause mortality.

These findings don't prove that sauna use alone caused these benefits, but the association remained strong even after adjusting for lifestyle factors.

If you enjoy using a sauna and tolerate heat well, four sessions each week appears to be an excellent evidence-based target.

Good for: People looking to maximise the benefits shown in current research.

Should You Use a Sauna Every Day?

Daily sauna use is common in Finland and is considered safe for most healthy adults.

There is no evidence that daily sauna use is harmful when sessions are sensible, hydration is maintained and you listen to your body.

That said, the research doesn't show that daily use is dramatically better than four weekly sessions. The biggest gains appear to come from moving from occasional use to regular use—not necessarily from using a sauna every single day.

Can You Use a Sauna Twice in One Day?

Yes—but it usually isn't necessary.

Traditional Finnish sauna culture often involves multiple shorter rounds in one visit, separated by cooling breaks. That's very different from doing two completely separate 30-minute sessions.

For most people, one well-managed session per day provides everything needed. Multiple daily sessions are generally best reserved for experienced users.

Is More Always Better?

Not necessarily.

Using a sauna every day won't compensate for poor sleep, inactivity or an unhealthy diet.

The evidence consistently points towards regular, moderate sauna use over months and years rather than extreme sessions.

Aim for:

  • Beginners: 1–2 sessions per week
  • Most adults: 3–4 sessions per week
  • Experienced users: Up to daily if comfortable and well hydrated
