They’re onto something. The hot-cold contrast ritual — known in Nordic countries for centuries — is finally getting the rigorous scientific attention it deserves, and the results are remarkable.
What Happens During the Sauna: The Heat Phase
When you enter a traditional Finnish sauna at temperatures between 80°C and 100°C, your body responds as if it’s under mild, controlled physiological stress. Core temperature rises, heart rate increases, and blood is rapidly redirected to the skin to assist cooling.
